Wilda is an incredible force of nature. She is dedicated to protecting the rainforests her people depend on–not just for their way of life, but for their survival. Thanks to your support, Wilda patrols and protects the rainforests of Bukit Tigapuluh (BTP) in Sumatra, keeping them safe, healthy and thriving.

Why Wilda’s Work Matters
Forests in BTP are vanishing. Huge patches of land are being cleared for farming and illegal logging. The entire ecosystem is in danger.
But thanks to your support, and Rangers like Wilda, there’s hope to save the precious land. Every day, Wilda and her team patrol the forest, keeping it safe from illegal activities, protecting wildlife from poaching, and engaging with local communities to care for nature. And it’s possible because of you!
Wilda’s Love for the Forest
Wilda loves her role as a Ranger, always fascinated by the beauty of the forest.
“I feel so happy and curious every time I enter the forest. I’ve discovered so much life I never imagined before—plants and animals living side by side, and an incredibly rich ecosystem,” she says.
Beyond the beauty, one of Wilda’s most favourite parts of her job is working with local rainforest communities.
“I’ve also had the chance to interact directly with local communities who live near the forest and possess deep knowledge and a strong connection to nature.”
It’s from them, and her team, that she learns new and interesting things each day.
“Every journey becomes a moment full of learning and valuable experiences. We don’t just monitor the condition of the forest—we also gather important information; from the state of the paths, we travel to the surrounding ecosystem and any potential threats that may arise,” Wilda explains.
A Proud Moment As a Ranger
We asked Wilda about a moment that has made her feel especially proud of her work. She shared a story of when local community members joined her and her team on a patrol mission.
“While in the field, we discovered that some individuals had cleared land in a restricted area. When we calmly and clearly explained that their actions were illegal, they not only listened but also acknowledged their mistake. They came to understand that what they were doing could harm the environment and negatively impact the surrounding ecosystem.”
For some families living alongside the rainforests, poverty forces them to turn to illegal activities like land clearing and logging to survive. But Wilda and her team were able to help, sharing important knowledge and inspiring a new love for the forests around them.
“What made me even happier was their positive response after gaining that understanding. They didn’t just accept our explanation–they also expressed a willingness to collaborate with us to restore the land. They committed to replanting the cleared area with agroforestry crops, which would both support environmental conservation and improve their livelihoods.“
This was a powerful moment for Wilda. It strengthened her belief that with respectful conversation and education, it is possible to work together to protect nature and help communities thrive.
Why We Need to Protect Forests
Wilda believes protecting forests means protecting the entire ecosystem.
“When our forests are healthy and well-maintained, the positive impact is immediately felt in our surrounding environment—clean air, fresh water, and fertile soil.”
She also explains that forests help manage natural water systems, prevent floods, stop erosion and keep the land healthy.
“Forests act as climate regulators and provide vital habitats for countless species, including wildlife. It's essential that we protect these wild animals, as they each play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance. Every living creature has its own function, and the loss of even one species can disrupt the entire ecosystem.”
